Joel Izlar, President

Joel Izlar is a graduate student at the University of Georgia's School of Social Work focusing on community empowerment, program development and nonprofit management.  His interests include poverty reduction, social, economic and digital justice, community organizing, technology, art and free culture. Joel has been instrumental in assisting Free IT in building capacity and growing the organization. He has been involved in improving the volunteer program, improving recycling efforts, has increased community outreach and training efforts.

Brendan Beal, Vice President



Brendan Beal
is a PhD. candidate at the University of Georgia's School of Social Work.  Brendan came onto the board in the fall of 2011 to fill a vacant Vice President position.  He is studying technology as it fits within the field of social work. His current projects include connecting Georgia's foster parents through a social networking campaign, bringing more art-inspired collaborations to established non-profits, and filming videos and movies around the Athens area.

Ryan Hauge, Treasurer

Ryan Hague took on the role of board treasurer in November of 2011. Ryan enjoys math and is talented with spreadsheets. He has been a phenomenal volunteer and has been vital in the training of new volunteers in the refurbishing process. His interests include autism spectrum disorders, neurodiversity, biological sciences and working in labs.

Natania Joiner, Secretary

Natania Joiner is an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia's School of Social Work. Her interests include mental health, advocacy, social justice, baking desserts, reading, watching great films, and hanging out with her dogs.  Natania has been involved in improving volunteer coordination and retention, administrative oversight of multiple Free IT Athens programs (e.g. training, sales, and oureach), as well as done a superb job at keeping records and making sure the rest of the Free IT Athens staff, and the organization, stays organized.

Joellen Steffen, Board Member


Joellen Steffen took office in  January of 2012. She retired from law enforcement in California after which she owned and operasted a pet grooming shop. She was into horses and rode with a ladies group in parades and shows and also volunteered with sheriff's mounted posse doing search and rescue.  Joellen moved to Athens 8 years ago and has volunteered with three other non-profit agencies in the area.  Her other interests include woodworking, computers, cooking/baking, mystery novels and of course her dogs.
