Free IT Athens offers educational and training opportunities to volunteers and to the greater Athens, Georgia community.

Classes

We currently offer only a few basic courses but intend to expand our offerings in the very near future.  Classes taught at Free IT Athens are unique and are not intended to recreate other courses being offered by non-profits in the Athens area.  In accordance with our mission, we do not teach classes based on non-free software offerings such as those offered by Microsoft or Apple.  If you are looking for classes based on non-free software, the Athens-Clarke County Library can help.

Our courses are aimed to educate and empower individuals to not only become proficient in the usage of the technology at hand, but to also understand how it works.  A clear understanding of how technology operates is key to long term empowerment.  Our classes currently do not require sign up and are offered on a first come, first service basis.  However, this might change in the near future.  Classes do not count toward volunteer hours, nor do they substitute for volunteer orientations.  For information on upcoming classes please see our calendar of events.

Volunteer Program

Volunteering at Free IT Athens is a great opportunity for individuals to gain hands on experience working with computers, for tech savvy individuals to share their knowledge, and for everyone to help make an impact in the Athens, Georgia community. Computer experience is not required for volunteering at Free IT Athens, but an open mind and willingness to learn is!

Our volunteer program focuses on a hands on approach to understanding technology.  Most volunteers learn how to disassemble, reassamble, test, refurbish and repair computers.  The program intends to demystify technology for those enrolled, build confidence, knowledge and skills.  For more information on volunteering, please see our volunteer page.
