Volunteer

Volunteering at Free I.T. Athens is a great opportunity for individuals to gain hands on experience working with computers, for tech savvy individuals to share their knowledge, and for everyone to help make an impact in the Athens, Georgia community. Computer experience is not required for volunteering at Free I.T. Athens, but an open mind and willingness to learn is!

Many of our volunteers:

  • Help people with computer problems
  • Refurbish donated computers
  • Support community organizations
  • Recruit and manage volunteers
  • Conduct community organizing, outreach and organizational promotion
  • Maintain and improve Free I.T. Athens technical infrastructure
  • Conduct sales and marketing
  • Sort donations and test equipment
  • Answer telephone and e-mail communication
  • Assist in computer trainings

Ready to volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age. Volunteers 15-17 years of age that wish to work independently are required to have their parent or legal guardian sign our youth permission form prior to performing any volunteer service. Free I.T. Athens does not offer childcare and unattended children are not allowed on the premises.

All volunteers must attend our new volunteer orientation session. The session is conducted at our 2092 Prince Avenue offices and is designed to orient new volunteers with our operations, organizational policy and expectations. For the next available orientation, please see our calendar.

To stay up to date on Free I.T.Athens' volunteer opportunities, please join our volunteer group. The group is a low traffic e-mail list that will keep you notified of our activities and events.

Volunteer Perks

Volunteers may receive a single core desktop after 12 hours of service, as well as a dual core desktop or a laptop after 30 hours of service.   If you are working toward a laptop please let a volunteer know before you complete your hours.

After 20 hours of volunteer work volunteers earn the option of being officially recognized as a staff member of Free I.T. Athens. Members are volunteers who regularly visit open hours, can work independently, and can lead others in at least one area we work in (e.g. refurbishing, support, training). Each Member also takes on a share of the projects and administrative work that occurs outside of our regular office hours. Members meet once a year to elect the board of directors.
